About Lu Bu (Lu Pu):

The invincible fighter in the novel (Romance of the three Kingdoms), Lu Bu though highly skilled in combat as well as possessing extraordinary archery skills is low on wits and intelligence. He was originally Ding Yuan's foster son and stood by his foster father in resisting Dong Zhuo's decision to dethrone Emperor Shao in favor of Emperor Xian.

Acknowledging that Lu Bu is a stumbling block to his plan to put Emperor Xian on the throne, Dong Zhuo adopted Li Ru and Li Su's advise of luring Lu Bu over with the famed Red Hare, silk, pearls and gold. Unable to resist the lure of the famed horse, Lu Bu slain Ding Yuan and defected over to Dong Zhuo's side. With Lu Bu beside him, Dong Zhuo grew even bolder in his tyrannical ways. After Cao Cao's failed assasination attempt, Wang Yun came up with the plot of "Double Links" using the beautiful maiden Diao Chan to drive either one of them to kill the other. Mesmerized by the beauty of Diao Chan, Lu Bu slain his foster father Dong Zhuo. The betrayal and slaying of both his foster fathers gave Lu Bu a foul reputation which would contribute to no small extend his execution by Cao Cao later on.

To avenge Dong Zhuo's death, Li Jue and Guo Si led their armies against Lu Bu. Unable to repel their attacks, Lu Bu escaped with his remnant troops. A golden opportunity arise when Cao Cao is attacking Xuzhou. Taking Cao Cao totally by surprise, Lu Bu aided by Chen Gong captured much of Cao Cao's base of operations, Yanzhou in one fell swoop. However Lu Bu could savour the sweet taste of victory for a short period of time when Cao Cao mustered his forces back to recapture Yanzhou.

With the loss of Yanzhou to Cao Cao, Chen Gong proposed that Lu Bu sought shelter under Liu Bei in Xuzhou. Fear for the threat of the combined strength of Liu Bei and Lu Bu, Cao Cao implemented Xun Yu 's strategem of "Rival Tigers and One Prey plot and "Drive the Tiger to swallow the Wolf" plot after the former ploy failed. The "Drive the Tiger to swallow the Wolf" worked remarkably well with Lu Bu's ambitious nature. Coupled by the furiousness over his stolen horses by Zhang Fei, Lu Bu launched a swift and surprise attack and captured Xuzhou by defeating the drunken Zhang Fei. The act of driving his hosts out is also another factor that would eventually lead to his ultimate defeat and death. Such act gave rise to Chen Jia and Chen Deng's ill contentment towards Lu Bu which aided Cao Cao's attack against Lu Bu.

It is ironic that despite the awesome combat skills he possess Lu Bu would not be defeated by his enemies but instead by his very own men when they tied him up while he was sleeping at the city gate tower in the city of Xiapi. Ironic too is the fact that such a highly skilled warrior who struck fear into the hearts of countless enemy soldiers and generals on the battlefield would be afraid of death. Tied up tightly and brought before Cao Cao, Lu Bu pleaded that he will submit to Cao Cao and further added that by using his awesome combat skills, conquering the country would be an easy task. Cao Cao was apparently going to be swayed by Lu Bu's enticing words but upon consultation with Liu Bei, he decided to execute Lu Bu since Liu Bei warned him that he may end up to be the third person in line to be slain after Ding Yuan and Dong Zhuo.

Thus Lu Bu's legacy of treachery and betrayal became the foremost factors that led to his ultimate doom.
